Can I perform myofascial release on myself?



You may wonder if you can perform myofascial release on yourself at home. The answer is YES!


Self-treatment is a great way to support your body between sessions or maintain progress you’ve already made. 


Whether you are actively working through pain or have reached a maintenance phase, myofascial release self-care is essential for reducing tension, improving mobility, and preventing symptoms from creeping back in.



Here are some benefits of self-treatment at home:

There are a variety of tools available through online retailers such as Amazon or OPTP for myofascial self-care: therapy balls, foam rollers, and even stretching.

You don’t always need equipment! Myofascial Stretching can be performed anywhere without any tools by gently stretching to where you feel restrictions, but NOT to full range, and allowing the tissue to slowly release. The goal is elongation of the entire fascial area, which opens up the surrounding tissues, giving you relief. 


The goal is elongation, never force! The ideal use of any tool or stretch is to start slow and gentle and work your way up. Listening to your body when something doesn’t feel right. Never push through pain. Self-treatment should feel relieving, not aggravating. If you're bracing, holding your breath, or tensing up, ease off!

Your trained therapist can give you personalized self-care suggestions so you avoid irritating sensitive areas or creating new strain. If you're unsure where to start, ask at your next session.
