My First Myofascial Release Session: What I Wish I Knew About Healing

My First Myofascial Release Session: What I Wish I Knew About Healing

ree

I was thinking back recently to my very first myofascial release (MFR) session.

At the time, I had just taken my first myofascial release(MFR) seminar and was feeling super inspired and curious. I’d been dealing with chronic neck and shoulder pain for years, and I had high hopes that this session would be the turning point..you know, “the one that would finally fix me.”

But here’s what happened: I didn’t feel much of anything during the treatment. I spent most of the session thinking, “What the heck are we doing?” It was so different from any bodywork I’d experienced before. I left with a few self-care tips, but no real explanation of what to expect next, how the healing process worked, or when I should return. I drove home confused and honestly, a little disappointed. I remember thinking, “Does myofascial release work?”

What I didn’t understand back then is something I now tell my clients all the time: Healing takes time.

Myofascial release isn’t a one-time fix. It’s a process like peeling back the layers of an onion or chipping away at an iceberg. That very first session may have seemed subtle on the surface, but it started a deep internal shift.

Looking back, that session was like kicking a pebble that started an avalanche. It was the beginning of something bigger than I could see at the time.

If I had judged MFR based on that one session, I probably never would have gone back and I would have missed out on the deeper, lasting relief that came with consistent treatment.

Here’s what I wish I’d known:

  • It’s normal not to feel dramatic results right away.

  • Your body might need time to unwind layer by layer.

  • Every session builds on the last even if you don’t feel it immediately.

  • Your nervous system may be processing changes behind the scenes.

We all want a quick fix but healing is not about instant results it’s about lasting changes.

So if you’ve tried MFR (or any therapy) once and walked away unsure if it “worked,” I get it. I’ve been there. But I encourage you to keep going, because the changes that matter most often take time.

Curious about whether MFR could help you?

I’d love to support you in your healing journey. Book your myofascial release appointment in my Canton office today and take the first step to see what is possible!
